Changes to the constitution
At the International Congress in Rome, the General Assembly ratified the amendments to the constitution. The changes, which have been proposed and under discussion for the last three years codify the evolution of the ILAE into a truly international organization. As all know the last several decades have witnessed an extraordinary growth in the number of national chapters, especially in Asia, Latin America and Africa, as well as in eastern Europe. The Executive Committee recognized some years ago that some regions had no real voice in the leadership of the League, and the changes made in the constitution and by-laws were focused on assuring representation of all regions in the Executive Committee. Although there has been a process for assuring a regional voice through special elections, there was a consensus to change the constitution to ensure that all regions had a seat on the Executive Committee and to improve the interaction between the Executive and the regional commissions.

There are a number of changes to the constitution, but the most important that is relevant for the upcoming elections is the direct election of the Chairs of the Regional commissions by the member chapters of each region. That elected Regional Chair will now be a member of the Executive Committee. The direct election of the Chairs will also end the current practice of the Executive Committee appointing the chairs of the regional commissions. This key change should improve communications not only between the leadership of the League and the regions, but also across regions for the benefit of the ILAE worldwide.

Special thanks go to the Constitution Task Force, chaired by Tatsuya Tanaka. He and his colleagues on the Task Force (Michel Baulac, Marco Medina, Simon Shorvon and Sam Wiebe) took considerable time and effort to review the old constitution and recommend changes that reflected the new realities and goals of the expanding international epilepsy community.

We encourage everyone to review the new Constitution and By-Laws in preparation for the elections that will start in 2012 in a multistep process. Please go to http://www.ilae-epilepsy.org/Visitors/About_ILAE/ConstitutionPage.cfm to review the new Constitution and By-Laws.
